PREVIEW: No. 6 Vikes face tough competition on Albertan road trip
The UVic Vikes women's soccer team has no time to rest on their laurels as the team riding a seven match unbeaten streak travels to Alberta for a pair of games against potential playoff opponents.
The Vikes will play the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. and the Alberta Pandas on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
Mount Royal holds a record of 4-4-2 on the year and currently occupies fourth spot in the Prairie Division of Canada West soccer. The Cougars have the ability to either jump near the top of the division or fall out of the playoffs entirely as just six points separates second from sixth in the division with four games left to play.
The Pandas have solidified their spot in the playoffs and have the top spot in the Prairie Division well within their grasp. Sitting at 7-1-2, the Pandas are five points clear of the second place Saskatchewan Huskies.
Locked in a battle for top spot in the Pacific Division is a Vikes team that is 7-1-2 on the year. Currently just one point back of the Trinity Western Spartans for first place in the division, the Vikes are also tied with the UBC T-Birds for second place.
The Vikes defeated Mount Royal 2-1 in Victoria last year, while the team will be making the trip to Edmonton for the second year in a row after they held the Pandas to a 0-0 draw one year ago.
Last Time Out
A goal in the 78th minute from second-year Vike Kyra Teetzen secured the Vikes a valuable point on the road against UBC last weekend. Not only did the tie keep the Vikes level with UBC on points but it also clinched an important head-to-head tiebreaker between the Vikes and T-Birds if the two teams are tied at the end of the season.
Mount Royal and Alberta played a pair of games against each other last weekend and it was the Pandas who came out on top by scores of 3-1 and 6-0.
By the Numbers
4: The number of goals the Pandas have allowed through ten games, the fewest in the conference.
