Pearkes Recreation Centre will play host to the Victoria Pickleball Association’s first ever tournament in Victoria and third this year on Vancouver Island from June 16-18. There were two tournaments in May, one in Comox, the other in Qualicum – it’s a popular sport.
For the Victoria tournament over 100 competitors will gather from all areas of the Pacific Northwest for the game that was invented just across the straight in Washington during a family’s effort to stave off boredom on a summer holiday.
Apparently, it is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. In the capital region, there are at least 18 facilities, that provide space for the hybrid tennis-and-badminton game.
The tournament runs Friday, June 16 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
The Victoria Pickleball Association was created in 2016 to organise the fast-growing sport for Greater Victoria. The association now offers clinics, league play, and tournaments for indoor and outdoor play.
