At the 2016 Dogwood track and field meet that took place today at the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium, there were three 800-metre races that included national and international level runners like 2012 London Olympian Hilary Stellingwerff and Geoff Harris as well as 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Kate Van Buskirk.
Several University of Victoria Vikes took in the races including Tyler Smith, Thomas Getty, Brendan Hoff as well as Rachel Francois and former Vikes, Kendra Pomfret and Thomas Riva, to name a few.
Not all results are not known at this time, however, Stellingwerff is estimated to have finished in 2:02.74 with a big finishing kick over the final 100-metres to win her race, while Smith appeared to have run under 1:50.00.
The stadium was windy and warm.
The women’s standard to qualify to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games is 2:01.50, while the men’s is 1:46.00. Van Buskirk and Stellingwerff specialize in the 1500-metre distance.
