Peterson, Simpson and men’s rowing honoured for March
The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council is pleased to announce the winners of the athletes and team of the month awards for the month of March 2016. The council would like to congratulate fourth year men's track runner Cole Peterson, first year women's rower McKenna Simpson and the men's rowing team on being named March's athlete and team of the month awards.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Edmonton, Alta. native and 2016 graduating athlete Cole Peterson started off his month of March as part of the Vikes men's 4x800-metre silver medal-winning team that finished just 0.04 seconds off the gold medal at the 2016 CIS Track & Field Championships in Toronto, Ont. A day later, the fourth year nabbed his second silver in the 1500-metre with a time of 3:51.94 to wrap up the CIS Championship for Vikes track.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
For a first year, Simpson's impact on the water this season has been an encouraging and welcoming sight for the women's rowing team. The Mission, B.C. product earned a second-place finish in the pair at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta on Mar. 5 before stroking the Varsity Eight to a Brown Cup win over the UBC Thunderbirds on Mar. 26. Simpson was nominated for the Female Rookie of the Year Award that was presented at the annual Celebration of Champions on March 31.
TEAM OF THE MONTH
The Vikes men's rowing team knocked off rivals UBC twice in March, beginning with an Elk Lake Spring Regatta 8+ triumph on Mar. 5. Three weeks later, the Vikes brought the Brown Cup back to Victoria for the first time since 2011 by winning the program's 18th overall title over UBC by just under five seconds at 9:01.42.
