Pacific Football Club (PFC) is pleased to announce defender Kadin Chung as the club’s first-ever signing ahead of the inaugural Canadian Premier League season. The 20-year-old returns to Canada following a 2018 stint in Bundesliga 2. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“It’s honestly surreal being a part of something like this,” explained Chung. “Getting to play for the team and getting to know the Island community and the fans. I always loved going to the Island during my youth career for tournaments. I’ve got a lot of good memories over there.”
Born in New Westminster and raised in Port Coquitlam, Chung is no stranger to Canadian soccer, having featured on the Canadian U-17, U-20 and U-23 squads. Chung was awarded the U-17 Canadian Player of the Year award in 2016—an award that has been presented to players such as Russell Teibert (2008, 2009) and FC Bayern’s Alphonso Davies (2016, 2017).
“We want to build an exciting team on the pitch with a foundation of young, dynamic, technical and quick players,” said PFC Director of Soccer Operations, Rob Friend. “Kadin is one of the top young talents in Canada and has a big future ahead of him, so we feel very fortunate to secure his services. He fits in very well within the technical philosophy of head coach Michael Silberbauer and we look forward to seeing Kadin representing Vancouver Island next season.”
As a youth, Chung was a member of Coquitlam Metro Ford SC, before kicking off his professional career with Whitecaps 2 of the United Soccer Leagues (USL). The young right-back registered two goals through 45 appearances and three seasons with the ‘Caps. Following his tenure with Vancouver, Chung headed overseas in 2018, signing with FC Kaiserslautern II, where he would go on to make eight appearances.
“Kadin is a big talent, he’s got big potential,” said PFC assistant coach James Merriman. “He’s excellent on the ball, technically. He’s good 1v1, defensively. His mindset is always to join the attack, and be a part of the attack and get forward. He is exciting to watch because he is always providing you that extra attacking weapon from a deeper position.”
Chung will be available to meet fans and media this Friday from 12-6:00 p.m. at PFC’s flagship store launch in downtown Victoria. 665 Fort St.
