Oak Bay High School has yet another team going to a provincial championships.

The senior boys Triple A volleyball team is heading off to the provincials on Wednesday, which will be taking place at Langley Events Centre.

Oak Bay won the Island zone finals the week prior, a tournament that they hosted Nov. 17 and 18th.

They have won the tournament four times since 2006 and finished second once, they are a perennial top contender.

However, this year is a little different. They are seeded third in the province. Considering the team is made up of athletes who specialise mostly in other sports like soccer and rugby, it’s an auspicious position to be in.

The last time that a team from the Island not named Oak Bay to win was Claremont and Belmont in back-to-back years in 1997 and 1998.

Pacific Christian and Lambrick Park will be competing in the double-A category.

The big Big Kahuna Tournament, which started in earnest in 1959, but has been of different iterations since 1940, begins Wednesday, Nov. 29.

Other Victoria teams to make the tournament are Reynolds, Royal Bay and Claremont. Reynolds Secondary is in on a wildcard placement.

Apparently there were upsets at various AAA Zone Championships, for example Penticton dropped from 1 to 4 in the Okanagan Zone, Delta defeated Earl Marriott in the Fraser Valley Zone, Argyle bested Van Tech in the Lower Mainland Zone, and Dover Bay of Nanaimo reaching Island leapfrogged over Royal Bay for number two.

“This speaks to the competitive balance in the AAA from one through 20.  Three teams received wild cards, Kelowna, Penticton, and Reynolds,” according to the organisers.
