It was a near-reunion for the University of Victoria Vikes cross-country team Saturday at Thetis Lake Park for the 21st annual Thetis Lake Relays. The event is hosted by the Prairie Inn Harriers running club, but it was the Bastion Running Club of Nanaimo who produced the overall wins.

Past Vikes athletes took in the race, as part of the busy national USport Cross Country Championships weekend going on in Victoria. The championships take place Sunday at 12:00 pm starting and finishing at the Beacon Hill Park all-weather soccer pitch.

There will also be an after-party Sunday at Sugar Nightclub featuring the Electric Sex Pistols.

“The after-party is always the fun event around nationals,” said Vikes alumnus Rachel Francois, who is organising the event. “The racing is hard and leading up to the race can be stressful, so the after-party is always a fun event to finish the weekend off with.”

The Harriers fielded the most teams with 20 of the 87 total teams entered, including several masters’ teams and the high-performance Prairie Inn Harriers Youth Team with their distinctive horizontally-striped racing singlets.

There is a quality team name contest as well as, new this year, worst team name non-contest, as announced by Race Director Bob Reid to laughter.

The best-named team was the Harriers’ “Brainless, Boobless and Fearless,” master women, who finished in second place in their age-division of 40-49, 30th overall and in the time of 1:26:01.

The havefuntryhardmakenewfriends senior men’s (20-39) team won the overall race, finishing in the time of one-hour and three minutes and four seconds. They defeated team Frontrunners by 23 seconds. The third overall team and third in the senior men’s category was KOMing in Hot. They finished in 1:05:13.

Havefuntryhardmakenewfriends team was made up of Shelby Drope, Trevor Ruck, Yann Bernaquez and Joel De Schiffart, who is an alum of Trinity Western University and grew up in Nanaimo. He will be watching his old teammates Sunday in Beacon Hill Park.

De Schiffart gave his team a large lead of approximately 30 seconds. By the time Drope took the fourth lap, he had to fight hard to regain the lead.

Frontrunners included Nick Walker, Glenn Saqui, Kris Swanson and Mark Nelson, who are all former Vikes. Walker ran the New York City Marathon, one week ago.

Vikes alumni fielded a team of Forrest Simpson, Jackson Bocksnyk, Dylan Haight and Trevor Schiavone.

The first junior team was Dover Bay Lazerhawks from Dover Bay Secondary in Nanaimo. Juniors are under-20-years-of-age.

The first solo runner to complete the event was Adam Buzinsky he crossed the line in the time of 1:09:56. He bested Matt Cecil, who finished in the time of 1:13:17, while the third-place finisher in the solo division was PIH Vikes +10 Roney.

The top women’s team was Westwood Wonder Women from Nanaimo. They crossed the line in the time of 1:14:09. Westwood Wonder Women included Melissa Ross, Erin Burrett, Kristin Clarke and Hope Stewart. Burrett was the 2015 GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon and followed the victory up with a strong marathon performance in Rotterdam in 2016, finishing in the time of 2:37:48.

“This time, I would like to run it without blisters,” shared Burrett who is looking to make Team Canada to run internationally at a global championship event. “I have unfinished business with that event.”

The second place senior women’s team The Cocktail Crew included former Vikes Rachel Francois, Shauna McInnis, Andrea Robinson and Justine Johnson. Francois, an 800m specialist, is currently training with Athletics Canada West Hub under coach Heather Henniger.

“I walked up a hill,” laughed Francois, who has a love-hate relationship with distance racing, especially cross-country. Her personal best in the 800m is very close to world championships standard. The Edmonton native is staying in Victoria to pursue that dream.

She has run as fast as 2:02.18.

Technically, The Cocktail Crew were not a complete former Vikes team as Justine Johnson, who ran for Oak Bay High School, went on to the University of Washington.

Full unofficial results are below.

The Thetis Lake Relays are part of the four-race Thetis Lake Quadruple. Race number one was Bob’s Magical Mile that took place on Saturday, Nov. 4, event three is the Gunner Shaw Cross Country Classic Saturday, Nov. 25 at 1:00 pm and the fourth event is the Stewart Mountain 10-mile race on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 11:30 am, 11:00 am for early starters.
