Mike Griffin leads Vikes on Day 1 of NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships
Ranked 13th in the final NAIA Coaches Poll, the Vikes head into the second round in a three-way tie for seventh place along with Dalton State and Canadian rivals UBC. William Woods University sits atop the leaderboard with a combined opening score of 284.
"All in all I was pleased with the guys' play today," said head coach Justin Clews. "The wind picked up halfway through the round and it seemed to give our guys some trouble out there. However, we are still right there score-wise heading into tomorrow."
Each team competes with five golfers and the top four scores posted each day count toward the team standings. Griffin's one-over-par performance was followed by Lawren Rowe (+2), Alex Cartwright (+5), and Andrew Funk (+7). Sean Hay finished the round at 84.
Griffin closed out the day on a high note, shooting his only birdie of the round on the 18th hole. He made par or better on all but two holes. Rowe, a fellow sophomore, had two birdies and four bogies. Despite battling the wind, neither player let their score get away from them on any hole.
"Mike and Lawren played well today," said Clews. "The guys felt like they left a lot out there but realize they are still in a great spot heading into our round tomorrow."
The Vikes will get back on the course later tomorrow, as they're set to tee-off at 11:40 a.m. PST. Live team and individual results can be found here.
