Competing for the second of what will be three straight weekends, the Vikes swimming team powered their way to top-five finishes at the Odlum Brown Colleges Cup in Vancouver B.C.

"The swimmers aren't rested and are racing fatigued, but are expected to race hard and maximize their performance anyway," said Vikes assistant coach Ryan Clouston. "We want them to come away with some pride and an idea of what skills to improve in the coming weeks."

The Vikes men finished in third place overall with 444 points. Both Jon McKay and Brett Zollencontributed 60 points for the team.

McKay had a pair of podium results, he finished second in the 1500-metre freestyle and third in the 400-metre freestyle.

Zollen had an extremely busy competition.

He finished fifth in the 100-metre breaststroke, sixth in the 200-metre individual medley, 100-metre individual medley, 100-metre freestyle, seventh in the 50-metre buttefly, and contributed to all four "A" relays for the Vikes.

Buzz Mallender finished with 42 points, with a sixth place 200-metre backstroke, seventh place 100-metre backstroke, and four "A" relay appearances.

The men's team finished well, coming third in the 4x100 medley relay.

The Vikes women finished in fourth place overall with 316 points.

Victoria Mock recorded 54 points to lead the women's team.  She had a third place finish in the 800-metre freestyle, sixth in the 400-metre freestyle and 200-metre butterfly, and seventh in the 200-metre freestyle.

Kaitlin Gervais and Allison Hampton contributed 48 and 43 points respectively.

Gervais finished fourth in the 400-metre freestyle, fifth in the 800-metre freestyle, and sixth in the 200-metre freestyle. She was also part of all four "A" relay teams.

Allison finished sixth in the 200-metre backstroke, seventh in the 100-metre freestyle and the 50-metre backstroke, and was also a busy contributor on the relays.

Next up for the Vikes is the Island Cup Invitational taking place in Victoria on November 13, as the Vikes continue to prepare for the Canada West Championships.

"The swimmers will gain a lot of valuable racing experience, many chances to improve and test their skills, and try to ready themselves for Canada West championships on this stretch," said Clouston.
