Louwes, Tomie and women’s cross country claim Varsity Council honours for October
The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council is pleased to announce the winners of the athletes and team of the month awards for the month of October, 2017. The council would like to congratulate fourth-year golfer Bruce Tomie, third-year soccer player Puck Louwes and the Vikes women's cross country team on being awarded October's athlete and team of the month awards.
MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Bruce Tomie, Golf
Bruce Tomie was named the Varsity Council's male athlete of the month for his outstanding performance at the 2017 Vikes Shootout, hosted at the Cordova Bay Golf Course. The fourth-year Vike from Bedford, NS shot a tournament low 141 on the weekend, beating the rest of the field by five strokes. Consistency was key for Tolmie who shot rounds of 70 and 71 while competing at the tournament as an individual.
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Puck Louwes, Soccer
Puck Louwes captured the title of Varsity Council's female athlete of the month for her outstanding performances throughout the month of October. The third-year goalkeeper from Utrecht, NED allowed just one goal against in the six games that the team played in the month. With her commanding presence at the back, Louwes played a huge part in the team going 3-0-3 in October. Her dedication and leadership in goal helped anchor the team this season.
TEAM OF THE MONTH
Women's Cross Country
The UVic Vikes women's cross country team had a strong showing in the month of October, finishing 2nd at the UVic Invitational and winning the university title at the B.C. Provincial Championships. Going up against top competition from across Western Canada the Vikes had three runners – Alison Hooper, Emma Edmonds and Chloe Hegland – finish in the top ten at the UVic Invitational. The team then defeated the Trinity Western Spartans and the UBC T-Birds to claim bragging rights as provincial champions.
