The Kerry Park Islanders moved to within three points of the Saanich Braves Saturday night by defeating them at home by the score of 4-2.

The Braves who started the season on a tear, going 10-1-1 in their first 12 games are now 12-7-0-4.

To break the slump, the Braves fired 34 shots at goaltender Rett Rook, outshooting the Islanders 34-26, but Rook was on his game.

The first period was scoreless. The Braves opened the scoring at 9:59 of the second period. Kyle Mace scored from Jackson Estey. The Islanders’ Tanner Tiel then scored to tie the game at 12:42. Brandon McClintick and Evan Easton assisted on the goal. It was anyone’s game going into the third period.

Logan Furkalo scored for the Islanders at 1:55 of the third period. Tiel and McClintick earned their second points on the goal. The Braves came back once more with a goal at 5:00 by Kyle Mace. Jacob McQuillin assisted on the goal.

McClintick scored the game-winner at 19:01. Evan Easton earned the only assist on the play. They added an empty-netter at 19:58 with Furkalo putting the puck into the gaping net with Matt Baird and Dawson Blanchette assisting.

The Braves powerplay went 0/4 while the Islanders were 0/2.

The Braves next play Thursday in Esquimalt at Archie Browning Arena against the Victoria Cougars and Friday at Pearkes Arena against the visiting Nanaimo Buccaneers.

The Islanders have an opportunity to leapfrog the Braves in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League standings when they play the Oceanside Generals at home today starting at 3:00 pm and then Wednesday at The Q Centre in Colwood against the Westshore Wolves. With two wins, they will move into second place in the South Division.
