The second race in the Vancouver Island Race Series – Cobble Hill 10K – takes place on Sunday, January 21 at 11 am.  The 10K is hosted by the Ceevacs Road Runners, one of Vancouver Island’s active running clubs. The club has been involved with the series since its inception in the 1980’s. Back then it was called the Cherry Point 10K when such notable athletes included Bob Reid and Maurice Tarrant.

“The course was a loop around rural roads south of Cowichan Bay,” recalls Ian Milne from Ceevacs and Cobble Hill 10K race director. “As participation increased a new site to host was needed, and in the early 90’s the race moved to Brentwood College and became the Mill Bay 10k. The route was an out and back along the waterfront south of Mill Bay. This was a scenic and popular course, but once again safety and traffic concerns forced a move and in 2008 the race moved to George Bonner School and became the Cobble Hill 10k. Still scenic rural roads and a flat course that is conducive to some fast times.”

Last year Jevin Monds from Edmonton won the race in 33:31, with Erin Burrett from Nanaimo winning the women’s race in 34:59. The course record was set in 2013 by Geoff Martinson in 30:46. The women’s record is 34:44, set by Cheryl Murphy in 2008.

“Ceevacs and our many volunteers are looking forward to hosting the Island running community on Sunday,” adds Milne. “We expect a strong field through all age groups – male and female – with the opportunity to provide a good test for runners from up and down the Island.”

The race starts and finishes at George Bonner Middle School, Cobble Hill Road. Runners can register online until 6pm, Friday January 19 at or on race day. Race registration until January 19 is $30 for adults and $25 for students. Race day registration is open on Sunday until 10:15 am at a cost of $40. Race organizers advise to get to the school early to register to avoid disappointment.

Cobble Hill 10K will be followed by Cedar 12K on February 4, Hatley Castle 8K on February 18, Port Alberni Paper Chase 15K on March 4, Comox Valley RV Half Marathon on March 18, TriStars 10K on March 25 and the Synergy Health Management Bazan Bay 5K and Series Awards on April 8.
