Esquimalt will be the centre of the Rugby universe on Saturday with three exciting events lined up at Bullen Park.
Starting at 1 pm the Canadian Classics play the USA Classic Eagles. The Canadian team will have 500 caps between them with greats such as Morgan Williams, John Graf, Eddie Evans and Jon Thiel take the field. The 60 minute game allows unlimited substitutions and no kicking.
Following the classic game will be a meet and greet with the Canadian Olympic Women’s Sevens Team. After introductions, the Lower Island High School All Girls All Stars will play a 20-minute sevens game coached by the women’s team.
At 3 pm the Canadian Direct Insurance BC Bears take on the Prairie Wolf Pack, hoping to bounce back from a narrow 27-21 defeat last weekend in the second match of the Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC). The Bears led the Wolf Pack 11-3 at half-time in their last encounter, but conceded four tries in the second half and were unable to regain the lead after falling behind. Bears’ coach Gabriel Fulcher spoke about the adjustments the Team will need to make in the rematch.
“There were a lot of positives from the last game but we simply made too many unforced errors at key moments,” said Fulcher. “Had we been more clinical during the first half when we were so dominant we might have got more points on the board to cushion us from a Wolfpack resurgence in the second half. This week will be about doing the simple things better.”
The Bears will make two changes to their starting fifteen, as Taitusi Vikilani makes his CRC debut at #8, while Josh Clarke will move over to flanker.
Admission for all events is $10 for adults, while students aged 18 and under can attend for free when presenting school ID. Children aged 12 and under are free.
