Highlanders end season on high note

The Victoria Highlanders got off to a rough start to the 2017 PDL season, but came together as a team and ended on a high note.

Highlanders FC (5W-1D-8L) concluded the 2017 Premier Development League (PDL) season on a positive note, defeating Seattle Sounders U-23 2-1 on Friday night before battling back to earn a 1-1 draw against Foothills U-23 on Sunday afternoon in Calgary.

Friday’s Man of the Match was awarded to striker Paddy Nelson, who netted both of Victoria’s goals in the eventual win. Nelson’s brace helped the Highlanders get out to a 2-0 lead before the Sounders would get one back late in the second half.

In his second consecutive start between the woodwork, goalkeeper Ty Venhola was sharp when called upon and was unlucky to not earn a second clean sheet win. Sounders pressed late to try and salvage a draw but would be unable to find the back of the net, as Victoria held on to earn their second win in as many matches and close out their home schedule on a high.
