Victoria Highlanders FC has announced the signing of two returning players to their roster for the upcoming 2018 Premier Development League (PDL) season. Goalkeeper Tyrone Venhola and midfielder Jonah Smith.
The two University of Northern British Columbia players will be coming off a strong season with the Timberwolves and will be looking to make their mark in the PDL. Originally from Abbotsford, Venhola is entering his second year with the Highlanders and is looking to build off last year.
“The island is beautiful and I really enjoyed my time with the Highlanders last summer,” Venhola said, “The new direction of the club coupled with my experience from last season made my choice to return to the Highlanders easy.
“I think there’s a lot to be excited about. Thomas brings a high standard and a wealth of experience with him to the club and I’m very excited to play under him,” Venhola added, “ I believe Thomas will put together a strong squad of players and I’m excited to get going with the guys and see if I can continue to push myself at the next level.”
Former Highlanders academy player and Victoria native, Smith, returns to the squad hoping to continue pushing for a starting spot after a strong 2017 PDL season. Having grown into the team in 2017, Smith aims to continue his development from this past season with UNBC in Victoria.
“Thomas seems like an excellent coach. He is looking to create a competitive environment, which is something I look forward to.” stated Smith. “The new ownership, the new brand, the new kits, everything will provide an opportunity for the club to continue to grow and becoming a top PDL side.”
As a product of the Victoria youth soccer system, Smith added, “Why the Highlanders? I am a Victoria boy, I love the club and the city. I couldn’t see myself with any other club.”
