Highlanders add depth ahead of Sunday’s match against Timbers U-23
Highlanders FC have added some more depth ahead of Sunday's match versus Timbers U-23 Canadian Isky Van Doorne and New Zealand native Fabien Kurimata have joined the Victoria squad, with Kurimata’s signing awaiting ITC clearance.
Originally from Calgary, Van Doorne recently completed his fourth year of eligibility with NCAA’s Calvin College, who were runner-ups in the NCAA Division III National finals. Van Doorne was named to the Regional All-American team, Second Team All-American, as well as the playoff tournament All-Star team following the season. Prior to his varsity career, Van Doorne was involved with Calgary Foothills.
Kurimata competed with Eastern Suburbs AFC and Hawke’s Bay United of New Zealand’s Stirling Sports Premiership from 2015-17. The 20-year-old scored five goals in 28 league appearances in two seasons.
“These signings give us some more options throughout our lineup,” Highlanders head coach Dave Dew stated. “They have shown well in team training sessions and I’m optimistic that they will be able to translate that onto the pitch when called upon.”
The Highlanders are coming off a bye week in the Premier Development League season and will be looking for a positive result to put them back in the mix for a playoff position. It’s the fifth and final home match before the team heads off for six straight matches on the road.
“We’re looking forward to this weekend’s match at the Timbers,” Dew added. “The guys have had a week or so to come together and it’ll be a good test to welcome Portland. With these new additions, I’m excited to see how the team performs.”
Kick off is 2 pm Sunday at Centennial Stadium. Parking is FREE, and tickets are available at the gate.
