 The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council is pleased to announce the winners of the athletes and team of the month awards for the month of February, 2018. The council would like to congratulate second-year swimmer Danielle Hanus, fifth-year runner Tyler Smith and the Vikes women’s rugby team on being awarded February’s athlete and team of the month awards.

Danielle Hanus, Swimming

Danielle Hanus made quite the splash in her first-ever trip to the U SPORTS National Championships. The second-year swimmer earned four medals and set seven new Vikes records at the meet hosted in Toronto, ON from Feb. 22-24. Hanus started off her time at nationals with two silver medals on Day 1, finishing second in both the 50-m backstroke and the 100-m butterfly. The second day of the meet went even better for the humanities major. Hanus claimed silver in the 100-m backstroke before winning gold in the 200-m butterfly, which was her fourth and final individual event. Along with her extremely impressive medal haul, Hanus is now the individual Vikes record holder in the 100 and 200-m freestyle, the 50 and 100-m backstroke and the 100-m butterfly. The native of Newmarket, ON was also a member of Vikes record-breaking teams in the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays.

Tyler SmithTrack

Tyler Smith was named the Varsity Council Male Athlete of the Month for February after a phenomenal month culminated in the education major earning four medals and being named the conference’s Outstanding Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner at the Canada West Championships. The native of Wetaskiwin, AB started the final conference championships of this university career by winning gold in the 1000-m race, before running the anchor leg of the gold medal-winning 4×800-m relay team that set a new conference record in the process. Smith wrapped up the meet by winning bronze in the 4×400-m relay and yet another gold, this time in the 600-m. At the conclusion of the meet, Smith was named the CW Outstanding Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner for his involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as being a 2017 Honour Roll Student and a First or Second team All-Canadian for the last four years.

Women’s Rugby

The UVic Vikes women’s rugby team were the definition of perfect in the month of February. The team won 12-straight games during the month and wrapped up their season by claiming the Canada West Women’s Rugby 7s Series banner on home soil at Wallace Field. Of their 12 victories only two came by five points or less, as the team dominated the series with a perfect 18-0 record. In total they outscored their opponents by a combined tally of 418-77 in the 12 games that they played in February.
