The Victoria Grizzlies (14-11-2-1) headed out for a brutal three games in two-and-a-half days road trip, starting up north against the Prince George Spruce Kings (15-10-2-3). They lost a close one by the score of 2-1.
The Spruce Kings scored once each in the first and second period, to take a 2-0 lead. Goals were scored by Ryan Stack with his second goal of the season and Ethan de Jong with his 12th.
At 1:52 of the third period T.J. Friedman put the Grizzlies on the board, to avoid being shutout. It was a powerplay goal set up by Jamie Rome. Chays Ruddy was off for cross-checking. Friedman, who hails from St. Louis, MO, has accumulated 9g, 14a for 23 points in 29 games so far this season.
Rome, from Calgary, picked up his 17 assists to go along with his nine goals. Rome leads the team in points, while Friedman is this behind Alex Newhook of St. John’s, NL.
The Spruce Kings outshot the Grizzlies 34-31. They went 0/2 on the man advantage, while Victoria scored the one goal in three opportunities.
Zachary Rose tended the Victoria net, while Evan DeBrouwer backstopped the Spruce Kings. The 6’0” 180-pound Rose is from Paradise, NL. His season record so far is 10-10-1-1 with a 3.17 goal against average and a save percentage of .915.
Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, they will have to do without Newhook, Rome and Rose as they attend a tryout for Team Canada West that will play in the World Junior A Challenge in Nova Scotia.
