After the first four weeks of the Greater Victoria Horseshoe Pitching Association (GVHPA) summer league, the ladies have shown no mercy in capturing the Player of the Week honours.  Wei Xiao leads all in week 1 followed by Maryse Atkinson, Sam Quinn, and this week’s Player of the Week Heather McCarthur.

Usually both the men and ladies are winning this honour, however, so far this year the guys are a little behind; the ladies are earning bragging rights.

The league has an 18-week season with Player of the Week honours going to the top player based on their score of two games plus their handicap.  Every player, no matter what calibre, can take home the honour by pitching over their average.  Winners of the Player of the Week receive either a Mug, T-shirt, or ball cap with Player of the Week inscribed.

Sam Quinn’s team leads the league with 20 points, which put them just two ahead of Gaslight Heat Services that Wei Xiao plays on.  The league is divided into two halves with top teams qualifying for “A” playoffs in each half.  The rest will play in “B” or “C” playoffs.

Horseshoe pitching in Greater Victoria has a rich 82-year history.  It’s like bowling only is played out of doors in the fresh air. GVHPA is always welcoming new players with little or no experience.

Interested players can drop by the club on any Tuesday or Thursday night to check it out.

The annual membership is just $60, it is the best-priced sport in Greater Victoria played in one of the great sports gems of a facility in town. The club is located at 620 Kenneth St. at Glanford Park.
