A new volunteer recognition award has been announced by the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon. The annual event, to be held on Sunday, October 11, has declared 2015 to be the “Year of the Volunteer,” and is asking for nominations to recognize the hundreds of volunteers who devote many hours to make the event a success.
“Behind every great event is a team of dedicated volunteers who spend hours ensuring every aspect of the Marathon goes off without a hitch,” says Cathy Noel, General Manager. “For the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon, over 1,600 people are relied on to make this happen; from a team that gives out medals and cheers on runners and walkers, to a board and committee of over 50 members who work year round on planning the Marathon.”
Bart Sutherland, one of the committee members has been volunteering with the Victoria Marathon for two years, and has been part of the running community in Victoria for six years. For Sutherland, his involvement goes deeper than a love for running. “It is pretty amazing to be part of a relatively small group of people that get together and put on a huge event, that exposes so many people to the City of Victoria in a way they have never seen before,” says Sutherland. “Victoria has such a wonderful running culture and endless trails and pathways to match runners of all abilities. Let’s make Victoria the Running Capital of Canada.”
“Everyone who touches the event makes a difference, whether they have been volunteering for one year, or 35,” add Noel. To nominate a volunteer, visit the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon website: www.runvictoriamarathon.com/2015/08/28/year-of-the-volunteer/
