The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s golf teams are set to host the annual Vikes Golf Shootout at the Cordova Bay Golf Club in Victoria on Oct. 16-17. Both the men and women will play 18 holes on each day, while for many of the teams this event serves as the Western Canada qualifier for the Canadian University/College National Championship.

The Vikes women’s team will consist of Rhiannon JonesCadence HellmannNicole GargarellaMelanie Murchison and Hannah Diamond, while rookie Katie Martens will compete as an individual.

The women’s field will include teams from Lethbridge, UBC, Arizona Christian, Corban, Alberta and Manitoba. The Vikes women are still fresh in their season only previously competing in the Saint Martin’s Invitational and Western Washington Invitational in the opening week of October.

The Vikes women finished fifth at the SMU Invitational, while Hellman led the team with an eighth place after a 163 score over 36 holes. At the WWU Invitational the women’s team finished eighth overall, while Jones was the top Vike after tying for 21st with a 158 score over two rounds.

On the men’s side , the Vikes will look to their top-4 competitors of recent Lawren RoweMike GriffinJosh Miller and Jacob Hayes. Sunday’s practice round for Jake Hamilton, Bruce Tomie and Russell du Toit will determine the fifth team spot, while the others will also compete as individuals.

The men’s field will include UBC, Calgary, Lethbridge, Alberta, Manitoba and Arizona Christian. This will be the fourth event so far this season for the Vikes men, following events hosted by Saint Martin’s and Western Washington, both in Washington, as well as the Coastal Collegiate Classic hosted in Salem, Ore.

Rowe has been without a doubt the top Vikes men’s golfer finishing as he finished second at the SMU Invitational, 10th at the WWU Invitational and fourth at the Coastal Collegiate. The Vikes were second as a group at the SMU Invitational.

The team’s will tee-off on Oct. 16 starting at 8:15 a.m. The men will start on hole No. 1, while the women will start on hole No. 10 at Cordova Bay Golf Club. Results will be posted at
