The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team stretched their win streak to two games heading into the 2015 semester break in decisive fashion on Nov. 28, downing the Lethbridge Pronghorns 85-55 to sweep the weekend series. The win moves the Vikes to 3-5 and back into the mix in the Canada West Pioneer Division while the ‘Horns remain winless at 0-6.
Second-year Vike Amira Giannattasio notched 26 points in the win, while teammate and third-year forward Jenna Bugiardini earned her second double-double in as many days with 18 points and 15 rebounds. The Vikes overall were a force on the boards all game by outrebounding Lethbridge 50-36, including 19 offensive rebounds to the ‘Horns’ eight.
Zoe Dahl led all Pronghorn scorers with 12 points and freshman Katie Keith continues to be a bright spot for the ‘Horns having another strong game with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Lethbridge didn’t do themselves any favours defensively, giving up 26 turnovers that led to 28 points for the Vikes.
A night after falling behind big early, the Pronghorns did have a better opening quarter Saturday night but still found themselves down 22-11 after 10 minutes. The ‘Horns shot the ball at nearly a 40 per cent rate after hitting only two field goals in the opening quarter last night.
The second quarter saw much of the same with the Vikes scoring another 23 points and holding a 45-28 lead at the break. Both teams finished the half with identical shooting percentages at 38.5 per cent, but the biggest difference between the two teams in the opening half was the ability of the Vikes to generate second chance points. The Vikes generated 10 offensive rebounds and the ‘Horns inability to take care of the ball led 16 turnovers to the Vikes six in the first half. On the strength of the offensive boards and forced turnovers, the Vikes attempted 13 more shots than the Pronghorns in the half.
While both teams cooled off substantially in the second half, the Vikes continued to pull away by outscoring the ‘Horns 20-14 in the third and 19-13 in the fourth to cruise to their second straight win.
On the night, the Vikes finished 34.2 per cent from the field, including 11 from long range. The ‘Horns were only seven for 28 from the field in the second half and finished the night 5-for-20 from behind the arc.
The Vikes will open the New Year after the semester break by hosting the Manitoba Bisons on Jan. 8-9 at the CARSA Performance Gym. The ‘Horns will open 2016 with two consecutive road weekends, before returning home to host the Bisons, Jan. 22-23.
