Rowing Canada Aviron and Rowing BC welcome 300 athletes from across the country at the 2018 RCA National Rowing Championship Regatta and Canada Cup in Burnaby, BC. Live streaming will be available at CBC Sports and RCA Facebook page from November 9-11.
The event will feature small boat competition (singles and pairs) followed by the big boat action on Sunday at the Canada Cup (quads and eights).
Canada’s top rowers will be vying for National titles this weekend including World Champions Caileigh Filmer (Victoria, BC) and Hillary Janssens (Cloverdale, BC) both racing with different partners in the women’s pair event. Crew from the women’s eight silver medal boat at World Championships will also pair up in this event. Rebecca Zimmerman (Toronto, ON) and Christine Roper (Montego Bay, JM), Susanne Grainger (London, ON) and Jen Martins (Toronto, ON), and Lisa Roman partnering with Kristin Bauder (Langley, BC).
The men’s pair event is stacked with an impressive lineup of elite rowers including Taylor Perry (Ancaster, ON) and Mackenzie Copp (London, ON), Kai Langerfeld (North Van, BC) and Conlin McCabe (Brockville, ON), Ben de Wit (Port Alice, BC) and Martin Barakso (Nanaimo, BC) and Dave DeGroot (St. Catharines, ON) partnered with Ray Bell (Surrey, BC).
The men’s single event has the largest number of entries including two-time Olympic champion, Mahé Drysdale of New Zealand, 2012 Olympic silver medalist Will Crothers (Kingston, ON), Olympian Tim Schrijver (Thedford, ON) and Pan Am Gold medalist Matt Buie (Duntroon, ON).
Rio Olympian Carling Zeeman (Cambridge, ON) will compete alongside National team rowers Andrea Proske (Victoria, BC), Gabrielle Smith (Unionville, ON), and Jennifer Casson (Kingston, ON) in the women’s single with a total of 61 entries.
The Lightweight men’s event features top international rowers, Patrick Keane (Victoria, BC), and siblings Aaron and Max Lattimer (Delta, BC), while headlining on the women’s side is Jill Moffatt (Bethany, On), and Ellen Gleadow (Vancouver, BC).
Top Para rowers Andrew Todd (Thunder Bay, ON), Kyle Fredrickson (Duncan, BC), Jeremy Hall (St. Paul AB), Bayleigh Hooper (Chatsworth, ON), and Tracy Asseldonk (Abbotsford, BC) will race in the open single event with Christine Robbins and James Kwinecki racing in the pairs event.
On Saturday, RCA will welcome members of the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic rowing team to celebrate their 10th anniversary – 4 Olympic medals and the first ever Canadian Paralympic Rowing Team. Members of the 2008 Men’s eight, women’s eight and lightweight men’s four will row followed by a VIP alumni reception.
On Sunday, all medalists from the National Rowing Championships and Canada Cup will be celebrated at the Athlete Awards banquet at the Hilton Metrotown – Burnaby.
