Wednesday night the Westshore Wolves will host the undefeated Saanich Braves at The Q Centre in Colwood.

It’s a tale of two teams currently heading in different directions. The Wolves are mired in the basement of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s South Division, with a 3-7-0-2 record, while the Braves sit atop the entire league with a 10-0-1-1 record.

The Braves have taken care of both ends of the ice, scoring a league-leading 61 goals, while only the Nanaimo Buccaneers have allowed fewer goals against, 29 and 28 respectively. The Buccaneers have played 13 games, while the Braves 12.

Asked what is the key to the newfound success, Braves coach and general manager Sam Waterfield said, “I think our start has a lot to do with the core group we were able to return this season. The guys are hungry from last year and been eager since day 1 of camp.”

They play again Friday at Pearkes Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm Wednesday and 6:30 pm Friday.

Elsewhere, the Comox Valley Glacier Kings will visit the Victoria Cougars on Thursday. The Glacier Kings are still looking for their first win of the season and are currently 0-12. No one wants to be the first team to be defeated by the Glacier Kings.

The Oceanside Generals take their 5-7-0-3 record into Nanaimo. Nanaimo again is having a strong start to their season. They are second in the North Division behind the Campbell River Storm having gone 8-4-0-1 led mainly by their stingy defence.

Friday will see two other games when the Kerry Park Islanders visit the Cougars at Archie Browning Arena and the Storm visit the Peninsula Panthers. The Panthers are 4-5-0-4 and sit in third place behind the Cougars.
