Greater Victoria roller derby fans will be treated to two bouts Saturday night (June 2nd), as the hometown teams the Belles of the Brawl and the Margarita Villains face Port Angeles’ Strait Shooters and Island Smash-Up respectively. The Belles of the Brawl met the Strait Shooters on the road in March and came away with a decisive win.
Belles of the Brawl Co-Captain Ruby Roughhouser says she is excited for this game:
“We had a great time visiting Port Angeles earlier this season and are excited to host the Strait Shooters. We know they will be playing with payback in mind and are looking forward to the challenge. They have strong jammers and dynamic walls and we know they have been working hard! ”
The game marks the debut of the latest drafted skater for the Belles of the Brawl – rookie Lank the Tank – and the return of former Belles of the Brawl player Jack Widow. This game also features the return of Bony Banshee, who is playing her first game since incurring significant injury from last season.
The second game features the Island Smash-Up team, whose roster includes talented skaters from all over Vancouver Island. The Margarita Villains will also be debuting several of their newly drafted skaters for their first home game.
Tickets for the June 2 double header are available online at ticketrocket.co, and in person at Hive Hair, Esquimalt Rec Centre and Logan’s Pub and at the door.
All the action takes place at Esquimalt’s Archie Browning Arena. The event is family friendly (kids under 10 are free!), and includes a beer garden, half-time contest, 50-50 draw and a vendor village. Doors open at 5, first whistle is at 5:30.
The Eves of Destruction Roller Derby League was formed in 2006, has over 80 players, refs, and officials, and features five teams.
