Eighteen Victoria-based Special Olympics athletes and five coaches from four sports — golf, rhythmic gymnastics, softball and swimming are training at their last few practices and packing their bags for the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games taking place in Antigonish, Nova Scotia July 31 – August 4.
The athletes and their coaches have enjoyed an extended sport season with extra practices to help prepare them for the games. Golfer Nick Farrell — who qualified for the national games after winning a gold medal at the provincial games will be joined by coaches Lynn Harrisen, Jason Yan, and Greg Ross. Desiree Grubell and Brittany Scruton will compete in rhythmic gymnastics under the guidance of coach Michelle Cooper, and Victoria’s swimming contingent is comprised of athletes Terri Carelius, Kelsey Simpson, Cheyenne Furlong-Goos and Aly White. The Victoria Capitals softball team — recently featured in two exhibition innings with the Victoria HarbourCats — will also be competing in Antigonish with their coach Nicole Bracewell. Also representing Victoria on the Mission Staff for the games is longtime Special Olympics volunteer Jean Tetarenko.
Local Coordinator Kendal Alston says everyone at Special Olympics BC – Victoria is so proud of the national athletes:
“they have worked very hard to train for the games and we are so hopeful that they will have an amazing time in Antigonish. We wish them all the best of luck and can’t wait to hear about their experiences”
