The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council is pleased to announce the winners of the athletes and team of the month awards for the month of January 2016. The council would like to congratulate first year women’s field hockey defender Alexis De Armond, second year men’s rower Luc Brodeur and the Vikes men’s rugby team on being awarded January’s athlete and team of the month awards.
Alexis De Armond, Women’s Field Hockey
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Since earning a silver medal with the Vikes at the 2015 CIS Women’s Field Hockey Championship this past November, De Armond’s schedule hasn’t slowed down. On Dec. 8, 2015, De Armond was selected to Field Hockey Canada’s Junior Development Squad for the 2016 competition period. The first year was also one of seven players on the junior squad that were chosen to train full-time with the senior squad in Vancouver in January. Most recently, De Armond went on tour with the Canadian Under 21 team to Santiago, Chile throughout January, where the team won three of seven match ups. De Armond was then picked for the Pan American Junior National squad that will compete in Trinidad and Tobago, Mar. 29-Apr. 10, for a spot at the 2016 Junior World Cup. In addition, the Mount Douglas Secondary grad earned her first senior call-up to the Canadian women’s national team that is set to compete in the U.S. Series in California from Feb. 8-12.
Luc Brodeur, Men’s Rowing
MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Prior to the start of the 31st Annual Monster Erg on Jan. 24 in the CARSA Performance Gym, second year rower Luc Brodeur had his sights set on cracking the 6:00 mark in the 2-km race after coming just seconds shy of the Vikes 6-km record in December of 2015 held by Olympic hopeful Kai Langerfeld. At this year’s event, the second year and St. Catharines, Ont. native posted a time of 6:01, narrowly missing out on his goal but beating his personal best by three seconds to make him the fastest Vike in the program.
TEAM OF THE MONTH
A flawless Barnard Cup campaign from the Vikes men’s program ended with exactly that in December – A Barnard Cup. The Vikes men hoisted their second-straight and 12th overall Barnard Cup title in a 24-5 win over the Castaway Wanderers on Dec. 5. Third-year Vikes fullback Fergus Hall kicked three penalties while third-year wing Crosby Stewart did the work on the ground by running in a trio of tries to help lift the Vikes to back-to-back championships. The win capped off a perfect 10-0 Vancouver Island Rugby Union season and qualified the Vikes for the CDI Premier League, which runs from January to April and includes the best rugby teams across the lower mainland and northwest United States.
