MATCH 5: MSVU Mystics 3, Cavaliers de Bois-de-Boulogne 0
The RSEQ Conference recorded their first victory at the CCAA Women’s National Championship after the eighth seeded Cavaliers Bois-de-Boulogne upset the fifth seeded MSVU Mystics in three straight sets; 25-23, 25-20 and 25-18.
The Cavaliers completely dominated the ACAA champion Mystics getting contributions from a number of weapons. Six different players recorded at least one kill led by Marie-Genevieve Belanger who collected 13 kills while Ana Luiza Nicolae tallied 11 along with three aces, three blocks and six digs. Nicolae was named the Player of the Match. All-Canadian Christina Day was the top Mystic with a match high 16 kills and was named Player of the Match in a losing cause.
With the victory the Cavaliers move onto the Bronze Semi-Final on Saturday at 12:00 pm and will face either the Camosun Chargers or GPRC Wolves. The Mystics will play one more match in the 7th/8th game on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
MATCH 6: Lynx d’Edouard Montpetit 3, Humber Hawks 0
The RSEQ champion Lynx d’Edouard Montpetit made quick work of the OCAA champion Humber Hawks on Friday with a three set sweep; 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18.
The Lynx used a balanced attack in the first victory of the CCAA women’s National volleyball Championship led by Maude Babin and her match high 19 kills. Marianne St-Aubin was terrific off the bench collecting 12 kills and an ace while Charlene Robitaille and Laura Manseau each tallied seven kills. However Babin was the major factor and was named the Player of the Match.
The Hawks lose their second straight of the championship as their offence sputtered. Devan O’Connor was named the Player of the Match with four kills and six digs. Brynne Spence-Coleman led her club with six offensive kills.
On Saturday the Lynx quest for bronze continues as they will play in the bronze medal semi-final at 10:00am. The Hawks will play in the 7th/8th match and face the MSVU Mystics at 2:00pm.
MATCH 7: Lakeland Rusters 3, VIU Mariners 0
The Lakeland Rustlers shocked the top seeded VIU Mariners on Friday with a three set sweep at the CCAA women’s National volleyball championships; 25-19, 25-22 and 25-21.
The defence of the Rustlers was outstanding shutting down the big hitters of the Mariners holding them to 36 kills and making 10 blocks. Their great defence led to offensive opportunities and they took advantage with a well balanced attack. Ahnika Kuse led the charge with 10 kills while Alyssa Grondin collected eight. In all, six players tallied at least one kill.
Setter Rae Sigurdson was named Player of the Match as she was able to quarterback the offence and fool the Mariners defence.
Catie Hegglin was named the Mariners Player of the Match out of the middle with four blocks, five kills, a dig and three service aces.
The Rustlers, the champs of the ACAC, will now play for their first ever National gold medal on Saturday at 8:00pm. The Mariners on the other hand will play in a bronze medal semi-final at 10:00am.
MATCH 8: Camosun Chargers 3, GPRC Wolves 0
The host Camosun Chargers will play for CCAA gold after a three set sweep over the GPRC Wolves on Friday night; 25-17, 28-26 and 26-24.
The Chargers rode the momentum of the great crowd and the strong arms of their power side. Michelle Zygmunt scored a match high 16 kills and Katie Fetting smashed 11, while Megan Ireland chipped in with four out of the middle.
It was Fetting’s night, as the fifth year senior added three aces and 13 digs to be named the Player of the Match. She was instrumental in the exciting second set and took over in the third.
The Wolves offence found it difficult to really find a grove. Megan Koch was named the Player of the Match with a team high seven kills and four digs. All-Canadian Emily Groenenboom had five kills.
The Chargers will face the ACAC champion Lakeland Rustlers in the gold medal match on Saturday at 8:00pm. Oddly enough it was Lakeland in 2013, the last team to host and play for a CCAA title. The Wolves meanwhile will play in a bronze medal semi-final at 12:00pm against the RSEQ wild card entry the Cavaliers Bois-de-Boulogne.
