The usual suspects sit atop their respective divisions in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. In the North Division, the Campbell River Storm team is positioned in first place, tied for first in the league with the South Division-leading Victoria Cougars. Both teams have 19 points. The Cougars are 15-6-0-2, while the Storm sport a record of 16-6-0-1. The Storm, on the virtue of having more wins would take first overall if the season ended today.

Wednesday night, the Cougars needed overtime to defeat the South Division basement-dwelling Westshore Wolves by the score of 3-2.

Deadlocked in a nil-nil tie through the first period, the Cougars broke lose during the second period with Matthew Berryman scoring twice, once at 5:27 and then again at 9:41. The 6’2” Victoria 18-year-old played 36 games last year picking up 12 points. He is slightly ahead of that pace this year through 17 games with 4 goals and 3 assists.

The Westshore Wolves scored twice during the third period to tie the game at two apiece to force overtime. The comeback started with a powerplay marker at 2:31 by Parker Ellis. At 8:00 Cole Gardner scored. Dylan Parson set up both goals. The Victoria native is in his first year with the Wolves. It was the 17-year-old second goal of the season and eighth point in the defender’s 19th game.

At 19:15 of the third period Blake Bentham took a two-minute minor for kneeing. The penalty would carry over into overtime. At 47 seconds Kevan McBean would score the winner from Tyler Vanuden.

The powerplays for both teams went ¼, while the Cougars outshot the Wolves 35-30.

Cam Stevenson would earn the win in net for the Cougars, while Jordan Spandli took the loss for the Wolves, who salvaged a much-needed point with a record of 4-11-0-2-3.

The Wolves play again Thursday night in Nanaimo, against a Buccaneers team that is coming off of a 9-2 shellacking by the Storm last week. It will be a tough game to win for the Wolves. It is the only game on tap for tonight in the VIJHL. There are three games Friday with the Storm visiting the Saanich Braves at Pearkes Arena; The Comox Valley Glacier Kings will be in Parksville to take on the Oceanside Generals, who have yet to tally a win this season through 20 games. Meanwhile, the Cougars will visit the Peninsula Panthers at Panorama Recreation Centre.
