Camosun College Marketing and Communications
Student-athletes, coaches and supporters of the Camosun College Chargers gathered this evening at the Harbour Towers Hotel to recognize the achievements of the college’s student-athletes at Camosun’s 23rd Annual Athletic Awards Ceremony.
Fourth-year outside hitter Michelle Zygmunt of the Camosun Chargers women’s volleyball program team earned the prestigiousPresident’s Cup for her outstanding academic and athletic achievements over the 2016-17 season. Zygmunt led the Chargers to a silver medal finish at this year’s Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Women’s Volleyball Championship – the program’s highest all-time achievement. Michelle went on to be named MVP of the championship, becoming the fifth individual in the 42-year history of the CCAA to receive the honour as a non-gold medalist.
Soon to graduate with a diploma in Camosun’s Fine Furniture and Joinery Foundations program and her Carpentry Level 1 Apprenticeship, Michelle received a 91% GPA for the 2016 Fall semester. She received the PACWEST Academic Excellence award earlier this year for maintaining an academic honours standing from Fall 2015 to Fall 2016 and was named a CCAA Academic All-Canadian for her combined academic and athletic achievements.
“Being a Charger has presented me with the opportunity for growth both as an athlete and a student,” stated Zygmunt. “I have been able to create long lasting relationships and receive an education while playing a sport that I love.”
Presenting Michelle with the award was Camosun College President Sherri Bell. “I am continually impressed by the incredible achievements made by student-athletes like Michelle,” she stated. “Camosun is extremely proud of the accomplishments all the Chargers have made.”
