Chargers men’s volleyball squad sets up for super-sized season
The Camosun Chargers men’s volleyball team is setting up for one of their biggest seasons yet with a crew of exciting new players and the promise of a berth to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Men’s Volleyball Championship as Camosun plays host to the nation’s best March 8-10, 2018.
The three-peat PACWEST champion Chargers will go after the program’s first ever four-peat attempt with this year’s squad which includes a mixture of returning veterans and talented newcomers who could measure up to be the biggest team in the league.
“Fans can expect to see a different team than they have seen before,” comments Camosun Chargers Men’s Volleyball Head Coach, Charles Parkinson. “We have a lot height that we can put on the floor at any one time. Our front row at times can be 6’7”, 6’6”and 6’5” so we are going to be very much of a serve-block team. We’ve been training quite a bit on really putting difficult serves in that take options away and forces the other team to put a high ball up so we can allow our block to go to work. It’s a little different from the way we have played in the past but it doesn’t mean that we’re moving away from our previous style which was to really play some tenacious defense and score in transition. We’re just adding new dimensions because of the size we have.”
Returning veterans include co-captains and Bachelor of Sport and Fitness Leadership students, Doug Waterman (4th year middle) and Elion Wong (5th year libero). Helping anchor the team is fifth-year right side, Rian Plante and third-year university transfer student and setter, Mack Mravnik from Winnipeg. The Chargers also welcome back second-year student-athletes Cole Beevor-Potts (outside hitter) who graduated from Oak Bay High, Pacific Christian School grad, Dennis Candell (setter), right side Morgan Humphreys (Reynolds) and Ontario native Matt Bowers (left side) who was named a PACWEST All-Rookie last year.
Third-year left side Jerome Cross from Burnaby and fourth-year middle Spencer Janzen (Beausejour, MB) round out the list of returnees.
Playing their rookie seasons are Camosun Business Administration students Nick Martin (left side) who joins the Chargers all the way from Perth, Australia, middle Dale MacDonell who recently graduated from Pacific Christian School and Claremont grad Lorenz Vogel (middle).
The Chargers assistant coaching staff, featuring father and son duo Gord and Andrew Inglis, is also getting a boost with the arrival of Joshua Kirkham who comes to Camosun from Mt. Royal College in Calgary.
“Johsua is a terrific addition to our coaching team,” says Coach Parkinson. “He was a middle player, about 6’8” and is very close to the actual game from the players’ perspective so he can give them some really good technique corrections while the play is ongoing. And of course Andy Inglis is back as is Gord and they’re a wealth of information as well, so we have a pretty strong coaching staff.”
The Chargers open the season at home this weekend against Island rivals, the VIU Mariners and as with most matches played between these two teams, both squads will come prepared to battle to the finish.
“VIU has made some great off-season acquisitions,” states Coach Parkinson. “They’ve brought in two new setters, both of whom are terrific and they can really move the ball around quite a bit. They’ have also picked up some great attackers out on the left side and the right side, as well as a libero who comes to them from Lethbridge College via Brazil, who was an ACAC All-Star. They have an upgraded squad and when you think about what they had there before, which was enough to drive them to the finals of the PACWEST provincial championships, that’s some pretty good additions!”
