Victoria’s Jamie Broder started off her 2016-2017 Beach Volleyball season with a gold medal, won during the Trinidad and Tobago Beach Volleyball Tournament that took place in Turtle Bay.
Team Broder took the win with a brand new, first-time teammate Toronto’s Melissa Humana-Paredes.
Humana-Paredes previously paired for several years with Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg. The pair last won in 2014 ironically in the Trinidad tournament.
Broder started playing beach volleyball at the age of 15. After graduating from Claremont Secondary, she moved onto Vancouver Island University. Broder then competed for the UBC Thunderbirds, where she helped them win their first CIS championship in 30 years, which kick-started their CIS dominance with six consecutive championships.
Broder turned pro in 2004 and had short stints with a few teammates before pairing up with Toronto's Kristina Valjas; the two competed in over 60 tournaments over five years.
The duo competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics Games at Copacabana Beach.
In Rio, they made it to the round of 16, however, faced off against fellow Canadians of Pavan and Bansley and lost in straight sets.
The last time the two won was during the 2015 Trinidad event.
