Camosun College welcomes the community to join in the excitement as preparations get underway for the 2017 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship, March 8-11. The championship will feature the top eight teams in the country and will be Camosun’s first time hosting an indoor national event.
“We’re thrilled to be hosting this event,” says Camosun Recreation and Athletics Coordinator Graham Matthews. “We’re looking forward to the opportunity to showcase the country’s best and make the championship a memorable experience for the participants, spectators and all of those involved.”
Camosun will be putting out a call for volunteers in the areas of venue set up, tournament operations, opening and closing ceremonies and will also be seeking out ambassadors for visiting teams including those who are bilingual.
“This is a great opportunity for our community, especially our local high school volleyball players, their coaches and families, to get involved, attend the games and enjoy some top-level Canadian volleyball competition,” says Camosun President Sherri Bell. “Camosun is the only post-secondary institution in Victoria that offers students the opportunity to play volleyball at the intercollegiate level, so this national tournament is sure to be highly competitive and action-packed.”
The championship will consist of eight teams including five provincial champions, two wild cards and the host. As Camosun has taken on hosting duties, the Chargers who won bronze at the 2015 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship, secure an automatic entry to compete for the title a second time.
“There’s this tremendous excitement that exceeds the typical level of excitement that you start every year with,” commented Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Chris Dahl in a previous interview with PACWEST’s Ryan Watters. “We will still start the year with that genuine excitement of what’s to come… but we also know that at the end, we are going to have this incredible opportunity to represent the PACWEST on the national stage again and that definitely makes this season unique and special.”
