The second of three race days at the SCCA Sonoma Runoffs ended with close, hard racing in all classes. Results In Bill Okell’s F Production race, Joe Huffaker, driving an MG Midget ran away with his 10 first place gold medal at the National Championships. Huffaker win.
Bill Okell driving an Austin Healey another of Huffaker’s cars started in 15th position and ended up in 10th place. Okell’s car was stuck in 2nd gear for most of the 20-lap race, causing slower lap times and finishing two laps down from the first five place cars.
He was running as high as 9500 RPM in second gear. The crew chief advised him to keep it no higher than 8200, which he did and the transmission held up. Appears to be a minor fix to repair – but takes about 45 minutes. No other damage to the car after five days of competition.
“I am happy with a 5th in GTL and 10th in F Prod,” said Okell. “Podium finishes are quite elusive at the Runoffs.”
So far he is top Canadian out of 12 entrants, although four-time champion Colin Jackson from Langley starts again on the front row in GT3. Jackson has entered the runoffs and won four times, something no one has ever done. His race is at 3:40 PM
It was not ideal for sure, although a finish in the top ten is still respectable for any competitor at this highly competitive event. at one of the most revered and technical tracks around. OKell now has three top-10 finishes in his three visits to the Runoffs, with the highest being a 5th yesterday in the GT-Lite class. Watch for more action in tomorrows races here Runoffs Live
