The Sports Car Club of America’s U.S. Majors Tour continues this coming weekend with Western Conference action at the three-mile, 15-turn Thunderhill Raceway Park near Sacramento, California. The 12-race, Western North American, SCCA series nears the mid-point with races #5 and #6, on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Victoria’s Bill Okell, who had a disappointing start to the season back at California Speedway in mid-January, is back behind the wheel of the San Francisco-based Huffaker Engineering’s Austin Healey race car and really needs a pair of strong finishes to fully solidify his attempt to qualify for the SCCA’s National Championships, being held, early fall at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Grand Prix, road course layout.
Okell’s two poor finishes at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California early on in 2017 netted him a pair of fourth places when he knew that he had a second place car on Saturday’s race and a third place car for Sunday’s sprint race. Both Okell and the Huffaker Engineering team accept blame for the pair of results. Okell has one US Majors Tour win, back in 2015 at the Buttonwillow Raceway circuit, near Bakersfield, California and is really no stranger to the top three podium spots over his four straight years of national competition. In 2016, back at Thunderhill Raceway Park, his results for the US Majors race were a pair of second place finishes.
The last time that Okell raced at the National Championships was back in 2014 at Monterey, California’s Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, where he finished in 10th place.
