The UVic Vikes men’s and women’s rowing teams will host the top university crews from across B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan for the Western Canadian Rowing Championships taking place on Oct. 28 at Elk Lake.
Just one week out from the Canadian University Rowing Championships, hosted in Burnaby B.C. from Nov. 4-5, the regatta will allow the Vikes to see how they stack up against some of the competition they will face at Nationals.
“One week before Nationals makes this a good tune up event,” said Vikes women’s team head coach Rick Crawley. “There is a lot you can do in a few days once you figure out what your raw speed is.”
Despite the fact that the event is taking place on their home water, both Crawley and Vikes men’s head coach Aalbert Van Schothorst pointed out that there won’t be much, if any, of a home course advantage for the teams.
“The course goes in this week and nobody ever rows it (before the regatta),” said Van Schothorst.
“It’s nice to not have to travel but on the other hand, this is our second straight weekend of hosting and the athletes have to do a lot of the work when we host,” said Crawley.
Both crews come into the event after a successful weekend at both the Head and Tail of the Gorge regattas just one week ago.
“HOG-TOG was nice preparation and this will be further preparation for Nationals,” said Crawley.
About the Event
Both teams recorded strong performances at the event last year.
The men’s team captured the overall title thanks in part to first place finishes in the: four, single and pair as well as second place finishes in the: single, lightweight single, lightweight four, lightweight double and the eight.
The women’s team finished the event last year in second place as a team; winning the lightweight double and finishing second in the single, lightweight single, lightweight four and the eight.
Competing against the Vikes at the Championship will be their rivals from the University of British Columbia as well as crews from the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University, Fraser Valley University, the University of Regina and Lakeland College.
The one-day event will be jam-packed with action as the heats get underway at 8:30 a.m. with the final race of the day scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
