The Saanich Braves are the story so far during this young Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League 2018-2019 season. They are first overall and sport a record of 7-0-1, which is an improvement over last year, where they started at 3-5.

They lead the South Division by seven points over the perennial favourite Victoria Cougars, who are 5-3. Meanwhile the third place Westshore Wolves are 3-5-0-1. The Peninsula Panthers (2-4-0-3) and Kerry Park Islanders (3-6) occupy fourth and fifth positions.

In the North Division, the Campbell River Storm leads with a record of 7-3. They have played the most games so far this season at 10 and sit one point behind the Braves – the Braves have two games in-hand.

The Braves showed improvement last year and finished the second half with a strong record. This year, they return 15 of the players from last year and will take a run at the league regular season title and playoffs with the hopes of competing well at the Cyclone Taylor Cup in Vancouver.

But first, they need to continue to play well against teams that will continue to settle the dust on their roster positions. So the question is, are the Saanich Braves for real?

The Braves next test takes place tonight in Nanaimo against the Buccaneers (5-3) and Friday at home when they host the Cougars. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 pm at Pearkes Arena.
