Alumni to host Ken Shields Roast to support Vikes basketball future
When it comes to the name Ken Shields, the thoughts that come to mind are almost always centered around championship victories, hall of fame, a builder of national team members, an icon in Canadian and university basketball history but on May 27, alumni and the community will have a unique opportunity to come together in a classy roast of the Canadian Sports Hall of Famer. Hosted by the University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball alumni, the Ken Shields Roast event will be held at Uplands Golf Course with proceeds of the event going directly to the Ken and Kathy Shields Basketball Award.
"I am absolutely delighted to be a part of the upcoming Ken Shields Roast," remarked former Vikes men's basketball player Ian Hyde-Lay. "Ken had such a major impact on so many of our lives but that doesn't mean we can't get together and carve him up. The event is also in support of a great cause and that will make him very happy."
The sharp sense of humour Shields has dealt out to his players and colleagues over the past three decades is now about to turn on him as a panel of 11 former players, rival coaches, friends and alumni will put Shields in the hot seat. UVic Sports Hall of Fame inductees Rob Parris and Gerald Kazanowski are two of the men's basketball alumni who are privileged with spots on the panel, while former rival coach Jerry Hemmings, Vikes assistant Coach Ken Olynyk, and former Vikes women's basketball player Lindsay Brooke will also have time with the mic.
One of the most anticipated panel members is the re-emergence of Jim Hubbard, the iconic Viking known as "Mother Hubbard" who patrolled the McKinnon Gymnasium sidelines throughout Shields' historic era. Other panel members include Ian Stone, Ian Hyde-Lay, Mike Mulvihill, Arnie Bellis and Geoff McKay.
Proceeds from the ticket sales will directly support the Ken & Kathy Shields Basketball Award, which is awarded annually to both a male and female student-athlete on the Vikes basketball teams. Award recipients are selected based on their work ethic, commitment and performance – all qualities that Shields undoubtedly aspired for his athletes.
"The roast is an opportunity for alumni to get together again to reflect back on the special group of teams that was assembled under Ken and we also now get a change for some payback," joked panel member Parris, who competed for the Vikings from 1974-79. "More importantly though, it is an opportunity to raise some money to honour Ken and Kathy Shields for the incredible program they built at UVic. Through scholarships we can remember not only what they accomplished but also help future UVic basketball athletes. Ultimately we can grow the legacy."
There is limited seating for the event set to take place at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria, with an informal post-reception to follow Downtown Victoria. Tickets are $125 each or can be purchased by table of 12 ($1,500) or table of eight ($1,000). All tickets can be purchased online here.
