The University of Victoria women’s golf team will tee off their 2016 season when they travel to San Marcos, Cali. to compete in the two-round, 36-hole Cal State San Marcos Cougar Invitational at St. Mark Golf Course on Feb. 29-Mar. 1. The Vikes women haven’t seen tournament action since late October when they placed fifth in the Cal State San Marcos Fall Classic on Oct. 25-27, 2015.
The same combination of Vikes women’s golfers that competed in last October’s CSU San Marcos Fall Classic will return to the Golden State including first years Quinn Fitzgerald and Nicole Gargarella, third years Laura Ferreira and Cadence Hellmann and fourth year Shannon Raina. Ferreira impressed for the Vikes last time out in California by shooting a two-round score of 154 (77,77) to finish tied for eighth out of all individual competitors.
“We’re aiming to stay competitive in our first rounds of competition in 2016,” said Vikes head coach Justin Clews. “A team score between 310 and 315 is an achievable goal and something the ladies will be striving for this tournament.”
Adjusting to the course conditions early will be vital for the Vikes who haven’t had a chance to adjust to the firm and fast greens that come with the hot California weather. The Vikes put an emphasis on their short game in the off-season to help prepare themselves for the change in conditions.
“Here we’re used to more saturated conditions from all the rain,” commented Clews of the courses in Victoria. “It will definitely put a precedence on the practice round in order for us to adjust to ball reaction come tee off time on Monday. We’ve played this course every spring for the past few seasons and it’s fairly straight forward and short.”
