On back-to-back nights, the Royals have defeated the WHL-leading Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday 3-1 and the second place Kelowna Rockets tonight.
The Victoria Royals scored four unanswered markers to trump the Rockets 4-1, defeating the Western Conference’s top team.
The Royals scored three of their four unanswered goals on the man-advantage. Victoria’s Matthew Phillips tallied two markers on the night, including his league leading ninth game winning goal. The Royals’ Alex Forsberg registered the third goal on the powerplay for Victoria that completed the Gordie Howe hat-trick (goal, assist, fight). Victoria’s Tyler Soy would round out the scoring for the visitors. Kelowna’s Justin Kirkland scored the game’s opening goal.
Victoria netminder Coleman Vollrath stopped 22 of the 23 shots fired at him. Kelowna netminder Michael Herringer turned away 30 of the 34 pucks directed his way.
The Royals went 3/6=50.0% on the man-advantage. Kelowna posted a 0/4=0.0% mark on the powerplay.
Victoria’s win was their fifth consecutive victory and they have now collected points in eight straight games (7-0-1-0) to move within four points of Kelowna.
