Bill Okell will be kicking off the 2017 racing season at U.S. Auto Club Speedway this weekend as the SCCA’s Western Conference U.S. Majors Tour has a pair of races scheduled for the NASCAR owned track, just east of Los Angeles, California.
The 12-race schedule, up and down the western seaboard of the United States, will set the stage for qualifying for the SCCA’S National Championship being held in late September at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Okell will be driving once again for the San Francisco based Huffaker Engineering team, where they will be supplying him an Austin Healey for the championship run.
Okell has had some success at this event last year with a pair of third place finishes, but more importantly, he raced at this track just a little over two and a half months ago at the Pacific Coast Road Racing Championships and came away with a win and a new track record, driving his own MGB race car.
This is Okell’s fourth year on the US Majors Tour. He has one tour win, in 2015 at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, near Bakersfield, California. He has qualified through the US Majors tour for all three past, consecutive SCCA National Championships, but has only raced at one, which was his first year back in 2014 at Monterey, California’s Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca, where he qualified 16th and finished in 10th place. He is hoping and planning for a qualifying position at this year's ”Run-offs” as they are nicknamed, at the Indiana, Indianapolis Grand Prix course the same one used by the Formula One series.
